Well, well… I see that there are some Ed Cash freaks out there just like me. First off let me say that I am really happy that I have gotten the number of replies to the posting I put up some time ago. I apologize for being not writing sooner, but I am a senior at UGA and my classes do not allow that much free time to put towards this project. Anywho, here is the tab to “Real” and I hope that is remains intact over the Internet. SO, here it is
This is the reoccurring theme in the song. It is played easiest if you bar with your index finger in relation to the root chords, or notes because it is mostly variations or barre chords.
*Notice that the strings go from high E to low E (i.e. EBGDAE)
E----7-----------------------------------------------
B----7h8--------5---------------3----------10--------
G----7----------5----3h5--------4----------7---------
D-------------5------3----------3----------7----0----
A-----------3--------3h4--------5-------9------------
E--0-------------------------3-------7---------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------
B------5-----------7--------7-------8-------------5-----------7------
G------0-----------0--------5-------9-------------0-----------0------
D----5----5------7--------7-------9-------------5----5------7----0---
A--3-----------5--------6-------7-------------3-----------5----------
E--------------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as the last open D is struck the chorus really begins with what I like to call the "Ed Cash F" because I never played an Fmaj this way before. The trick is to make an F without barring and use your thumb on the E string, first fret for that extra "Umpf" in the F. Check it out:
The Chords go in this order…
Fmaj Gsus Amin7 G Fmaj
E---0-------3------3------3---0----------------------------------------
B---1-------2------1------3---1----------------------------------------
G---2-------0------0------0---2----------------------------------------
D---3-------0------2------0---3----------------------------------------
A---3-------2------0------2---3----------------------------------------
E---1-------3------x------x---1----------------------------------------
Those chords are played when Ed sings “is it real…”
Now to the fun part. The next phrase is the break and it can be tricky. It goes like this:
E----------------10----------------------------------------------------
B---8----------8----8-----------7---------7----5--7---12---------10----
G---0---9----0-------------0----0-------0-------------0--------9----9—
D---9--------------------9------7-----7------7--------12----10-------
A---------7-----------7--------5---5-----------------10---9-----------
E---0------------------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------------------B---0------------------------------------------------------------------
G---9-------9-----8--9-------------------------------------------------
D---7-----7---7---7--7-------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------------------
E---7---7---------7--7-------------------------------------------------
And then it repeats as the song continues…
The little break down part after that follows this chord progression:
Em D/F G Am9 A F B
E---0---0---x---0---0---x---x------------------------------------------
B---0---3---3---1---2---x---x------------------------------------------
G---0---2---0---0---2---3---4------------------------------------------
D---2---0---0---2---2---3---4------------------------------------------
A---2---0---0---0---0---1---2------------------------------------------
E---0---2---3---4---0---x---x------------------------------------------
After that it goes into the chords for the chorus (“is it real…”). Well that is pretty much it for right now. I haven’t decided how to post the rest of the tabs when I finish them, but I will let you know. Enjoy! Joe
